Boyd graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Winthrop University in Physical Education in 1987.
Boyd received his Master's Degree from the United States Sports Academy in Sport Coaching in 1990.
Boyd received his Docter of Education from Nova Southeastern University in 1997.

Dean Boyd started his football coaching career in 1985 while still attending Winthrop University at York Comprehensive High School. Dean moved to Indian Land High School (1996) the following year to help his brother Steve during his first year as the head coach at Indian Land High School. The following year Dean started his official first year as a Teacher/Assistant Coach at Hartsville High School. Dean coached Wide Receivers and Defensive Backs. During his tenure at Hartsville High School, he also coached Girl's Track, Baseball, Soccer and the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. In 1994, Dean left Hartsville High School to become the Athletics Director/Head Football Coach/Strength Coach at Williston-Elko High School (1994-1996).

In 1997, Dean became the Athletics Director/Head Football Coach/Head Strength Coach at Marlboro County High School. In 2019 after 22 years at Marlboro County High School Dean returned home to coach his alma-mater York Comprehensive High School (2019-Present). Dean has been an assistant and Head Coach for both of South Carolina's All-Star Football Games - Touchstone Energy Bowl North-South Game & Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. In 2025, Dean was an assistant coach in the Navy All-American Game in San Antonio, Texas he was the Defensive Coordinator for the East Squad.

Dean has coached over 200 College players and 9 NFL players at his schools. His teams have won 16 Region Titles and 4 State Titles. Dean has coached in 12 State semi-final games. Dean has been inducted into the South Carolina Strength Coaches Association and the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
